Lorquin's Admiral Butterfly
Basilarchia lorquini
Photographer: G. Price
Return to Native Flora/Fauna

Named for French collector Pierre Lorquin.
These are very fast gliding butterflies that zip in and out of your camera frame. When they glide
their wings are completely parallel to the ground. It only takes a small amount of effort
on their part to generate quite a bit of momentum. Found this one at Siuslaw Falls.
The one below was more amenable to photographing east of Cottage Grove at Forest Road 22.

Found the one below at Scottsburg Park on HWY 38.

Habitat: river bottomlands, canals, lakeshores, parks, forest margins
Season: June to September
