Basilarchia lorquini

back to Native Flora/Fauna

Named for French collector Pierre Lorquin.
These are very fast gliding butterflies that zip in and out of your camera frame. When they glide
their wings are completely parallel to the ground. It only takes a small amount of effort
on their part to generate quite a bit of momentum. Found this one at Siuslaw Falls.
This variety is spunky - it lunges at gulls until the birds leave the area.

Habitat: river bottomlands, canals, lakeshores, parks, forest margins
Season: June to September

Found the one below at Scottsburg Park on HWY 38.
